Salalah and the surrounding Dhofar region in southern Oman offer a unique contrast to the rest of the country. Between June and September, the monsoon (khareef) brings cool, humid air from the Indian Ocean, while the rest of Oman swelters in the heat. This transforms the landscape into a lush, tropical green and makes Salalah an ideal summer getaway. The city itself lies on a long sandy beach lined with palm trees, surrounded by mountains that trap moisture, allowing the famous frankincense trees to grow and produce fragrant resin sold locally and worldwide. With its modern vibe and spectacular natural surroundings, Salalah is the perfect base from which to explore the Dhofar region.
The subtropical Dhofar region offers a wide variety of landscapes, from jungle to desert, with ecological highlights such as Wadi Darbat in the Dhofar Mountains. This valley is home to many migratory birds and endangered species, including the Arabian leopard, and herds of camels can often be seen around the freshwater lake in the valley. Even in winter, when the riverbed dries up, Wadi Darbat remains an impressive destination. It’s just a 40-minute drive from Salalah in a rental car, and it’s recommended to set aside at least half a day to explore the valley and enjoy the spectacular scenery.
