Jabreen Castle (also known as Jibreen Fort) is one of Oman’s most beautiful historical landmarks and is located in a palm grove near Nizwa. The castle, built in 1670 by Imam Balarab bin Sultan Al Ya’rubi, originally served as a residence and later as an administrative center. The imposing complex has five stories and 55 rooms and is constructed of stone and sandstone, with richly decorated interiors. Inside, the painted ceilings, graceful arches, and refined wood carvings are particularly striking. An absolute highlight is the famous Sun and Moon Room, featuring an ingenious system of windows for light and natural ventilation.
The fort consists of several structures arranged around two courtyards featuring deep wells and a clever irrigation system that also supplied water to the surrounding palm groves. From the castle walls, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the arid plains and green oases. Today, you can visit the castle with an audio tour that takes you through the various rooms and brings stories from the past to life. Combine your visit with the nearby Bahla Fort for a complete picture of the rich history and architecture of this region in Oman.
