Wahiba Sands and Saiq Plateau – Oman

Wahiba Sands and Saiq Plateau, Oman

Wahiba Sands in eastern Oman is a breathtaking desert of endless, rolling dunes that range in color from pale gold to coppery orange at sunset. Just a three-hour drive from Muscat, an overnight stay at Oman’s most beautiful glamping site offers a unique opportunity to experience the raw power and beauty of the Wahiba Sands desert. The dunes run from north to south and reach heights of up to 100 meters, while the south is dotted with treacherous salt flats. The sand mass shifts up to 10 meters annually, meaning there are no permanent roads, and the few tracks left behind are those of visitors and nomadic Bedouins, who still live here according to centuries-old traditions.

Visitors to the Wahiba Sands can choose from a wide range of activities, from dune bashing in 4x4s to climbing the dunes to watch a spectacular sunset. Thanks to minimal light pollution, stargazing is a popular evening activity. The desert is home to a surprising amount of flora and fauna, including various birds, mammals, and reptiles, thanks to hidden underground water reserves. The Wahiba Sands offer a perfect blend of adventure, nature, and cultural experiences, appealing to both families and adventurous travelers.

Wahiba Sands is visited during the Saudi Arabia and Oman Tour, as well as during the 9-day Oman Highlights Tour . A truly special experience is an overnight stay in the Wahiba Sands at Oman’s most beautiful glamping site.

The Saiq Plateau, situated at an altitude of approximately 2,000 meters, is one of Oman’s most beautiful natural highlands. Surrounded by rocky peaks to the north and the steep gorge of Wadi al Ayn to the south, the plateau has provided fertile agricultural land for over a thousand years thanks to its temperate Mediterranean climate. Here, fruits such as peaches, pears, grapes, apples, and pomegranates thrive, alongside vegetables and the region’s famous roses. The plateau is particularly appealing during the hot summer months thanks to its cooler temperatures. Access has been made easy via a modern paved road from Birkat al Mawz, though a 4WD vehicle remains mandatory. Despite some modern developments, such as the town of Saih Katenah and a military camp, the Saiq Plateau remains a breathtaking destination, offering spectacular views over Wadi al Ayn and idyllic traditional villages like Al Aqr and Al Ayn, making it a must-see for nature lovers and adventurers in Oman.
