Sheltered by the imposing Hajar Mountains, Nizwa developed into a stronghold of conservatism and tradition, posing a challenge for centuries to rulers seeking to unify the country. The iconic Nizwa Fort, a circular defensive structure 35 meters high and 46 meters in diameter, dominates the city. With narrow, winding staircases, strategic defensive openings, and historical defense methods such as boiling date syrup, the fort was practically impregnable. North of the city lies Jabreen Fort, known for its beautifully painted ceilings and historic interior, while Bahla Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers valuable insights into traditional adobe construction techniques and is known for its high-quality ceramics.
In addition to its impressive forts, Nizwa is known for its bustling souks and lively goat market. Every Friday morning, traders and visitors from far and wide gather at the traditional auction, where goats and cows are traded in an authentic manner. The market, with its colorful locals, jewelry, khunjars, and historic atmosphere, offers a unique glimpse into local life. Even outside of the Friday market, Nizwa is a cultural must-see: the old city, once the capital of Oman, remains a hub for trade, art, and education. Strolling through the charming alleys and admiring the photogenic doors and traditional buildings makes for a complete visit.
Nizwa is visited during the Saudi Arabia and Oman Tour, as well as during the 9-day Oman Highlights Tour .
