Edge of the World in Saudi Arabia

Edge of the World in Saudi Arabia

An otherworldly landscape that defies imagination.

In the heart of Saudi Arabia lies an amazing natural wonder known as "Edge of the World" (official name Jebel Fihrayn). Edge of the World is the name of the cliff which is 700 meters long and 300 meters high. Located about 100 kilometers northwest of the capital Riyadh, this breathtaking landscape offers a rare view of the rugged nature of central Saudi Arabia. With its towering cliffs, endless expanse and pristine beauty, the Edge of the World is one of Saudi Arabia's best-kept secrets.

Edge of the World and the Tuwaiq Mountains

The first thing you notice when you arrive at the Edge of the World is the impressive cliff that stretches for about 800 kilometers and is part of the Tuwaiq Mountains, from the province of Najran all the way to the southern border of Qassim, ending in Az-Zulfi. This geological phenomenon is the result of millions of years of erosion, with wind and water sculpting the limestone formations into the breathtaking cliffs we see today. From the edge of this cliff, an immense void stretches out, where the landscape ends abruptly and the horizon merges into nothingness. The feeling of serenity and vastness you experience here is truly unique. The landscape is very reminiscent of the Disney film 'The Lion King'.

In addition to its natural beauty, the Edge of the World also has historical and cultural significance. The area was once part of the ancient caravan route and was used as a strategic point for traders traveling through the region. The cliffs served as an orientation point for travelers and provided shelter from the unpredictable desert conditions. Moreover, archaeological sites dating back to pre-Islamic times have been discovered in the vicinity of Edge of the World, adding even more historical value to the area.

What makes the Edge of the World truly fascinating, however, is its surreal atmosphere. The raw, pristine beauty of the landscape, combined with the sense of seclusion and the immense emptiness stretching out before you, create an almost otherworldly feeling. It is no surprise that this beautiful area is becoming increasingly popular with adventure travelers and photographers seeking unique and breathtaking landscapes.

Although the Edge of the World is still relatively unknown to the general public, the Saudi government has made efforts in recent years to promote the area as a tourist destination. Several infrastructure improvements, such as hiking trails and picnic areas, have been made to allow visitors to fully enjoy this natural resource.

If you are planning a trip to Saudi Arabia, don't miss the Edge of the World. It is a place where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the metropolis of Riyadh behind you and immerse yourself in the majestic beauty of Mother Nature. Whether you are an adventurer, a nature lover or just looking for a unique experience, the Edge of the World is sure to enchant you and capture your imagination like few other places on earth can.

Edge of the World

How do you reach Edge of the World?

The Edge of the World is located in the desert, far from main roads, making a 4WD vehicle absolutely essential. The route there involves a lot of off-road driving on unmarked, rocky and uneven dirt roads - a challenging drive where you can easily get lost.

The journey from Riyadh takes approximately 1.5 hours (depending on traffic). An experienced driver who knows the area well—especially the desert—is highly recommended. This allows you to sit back and enjoy the breathtaking scenery while someone else does the hard work of driving for you.

The best time to visit Edge of the World

Although you can visit Edge of the World year-round, the best time is during the cooler winter months of October through March. Temperatures are pleasant then, allowing you to fully enjoy your visit. Avoid the hot summer months, when temperatures soar. Since there is no shade in the desert, it then becomes very difficult to enjoy the views, and walks between the various viewpoints are almost impossible.

In addition, it is recommended to visit Edge of the World on a weekday, as it is quieter and less crowded than on weekends (in Saudi Arabia, weekends fall on Fridays and Saturdays).

We recommend wearing sturdy walking shoes, as you will need to walk to the top yourself. It is not a difficult climb, and even beginners can complete this walk to the viewpoint.

Please note:keep a safe distance from the edge of the cliff as it is not yet fenced off!

Sunrise or sunset at Edge of the World?

The best time to visit the Edge of the World is in the afternoon during sunset, as the light is most beautiful at that time of day. As the sun sets, the cliffs take on a beautiful warm orange glow - something you would not see at sunrise, as the sun would be hidden behind them.
