Oman with Kids – Family Trip

Oman with children

In early 2026, just before the official launch of Oman as a new travel destination in our portfolio, we took a special 7-day family trip through Oman with our daughter. During this family trip, we discovered the country’s impressive diversity: from the charming capital of Muscat and the spectacular mountain landscapes of Jebel Akhdar to luxury hotels, authentic experiences, and an overnight stay at Oman’s most beautiful glamping site. In just one week, we were introduced to ancient culture, breathtaking nature, vast deserts, green wadis, and the country’s surprisingly modern infrastructure.

Oman has exceeded all our expectations. It is a diverse, safe, and easy-to-travel-to destination, even for families. What makes Oman truly special is the combination of tranquility, nature, luxury, traditions, and the exceptional hospitality of the Omani people. In this travelogue, we’d love to take you on a virtual tour of Oman’s highlights—perhaps the most beautiful travel destination in the Middle East.

Day 1 – A Warm Welcome to Muscat

Upon arrival at Muscat Airport, we were personally escorted to the Primeclass Lounge, where all entry formalities were efficiently handled on our behalf. As soon as we collected our luggage, our private driver took us to our hotel, where we were able to check in immediately.

We stayed at the Al Bustan Palace hotel. What makes this hotel unique is its spacious layout and very long beach, which is ideal for walks along the shore—a rare find compared to other hotels in Muscat.

It’s an excellent choice for families, as many rooms can accommodate 2 adults and 2 children, and there are also plenty of rooms with connecting doors available.

Day 2 – Muscat in all its glory

Today, accompanied by a guide, we explored the the most beautiful highlights of Muscat . We were picked up at our hotel at 9:00 a.m. for an impressive introduction to one of the most authentic and charming cities in the Middle East.

The first highlight of this city tour was a visit to the spectacular Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque. This imposing mosque is one of Oman’s most important landmarks and is known for its magnificent Islamic architecture, gigantic prayer hall, and one of the largest hand-knotted carpets in the world.

Next, we visited the iconic Royal Opera House, an architectural masterpiece and cultural symbol of modern Oman.

Of course, a visit to the lively fish market was a must on the itinerary—a unique place where local fishermen sell their fresh catch every morning. Afterward, we took a stroll through the charming Muttrah Souq, one of Oman’s oldest and most authentic souks. In the narrow alleys, we discovered a colorful world of incense, spices, silverware, textiles, and traditional Omani souvenirs.

The city tour ended along the picturesque Muttrah Corniche in the historic heart of Muscat. Here we enjoyed stunning views of the harbor and the impressive Al Alam Palace, the sultan’s ceremonial palace, beautifully situated between the imposing Portuguese forts of Al Jalali Fort and Al Mirani Fort.

Day 3 – An adventure in the mountains of Oman

Today we drove one of Oman’s most spectacular 4×4 routes. The day began with a visit to Nakhl, known for its impressive Nakhal Fort and the natural hot springs at the foot of the Hajar Mountains. Passing through the authentic town of Al Awabi, we then drove toward Wadi Bani Awf, where the paved road gives way to an adventurous off-road route through spectacular mountain landscapes, deep gorges, and green oases dotted with date palms. Along the way, we passed through traditional mountain villages, including the picturesque Bilad Sayt, considered one of the most beautiful villages in Oman.

After stopping at the Sharaf Al Alamayn panoramic viewpoint, which offers impressive views of the Hajar Mountains, we continued on via Al Hamra toward Nizwa.

We spent the night at The View. The View is the only 4-star hotel in the Nizwa, Al Hamra, and Jebel Shams region. For travelers wishing to drive the spectacular mountain route through Wadi Bani Awf, there is virtually no alternative in this price range. The hotel’s location, with views of Al Hamra and the surrounding mountains, is exceptionally beautiful.

Day 4 – Mountains and Omani traditions

The day began with a visit to the charming mountain village of Misfat Al Abriyeen, one of the most beautiful and authentic villages in Oman. This ancient village, spectacularly situated on the slopes of the Hajar Mountains, is known for its traditional mud-brick houses, green terraces, and historic aflaj irrigation systems that are still in use today. During a leisurely stroll, we discovered narrow alleys, date plantations, and hidden vistas of the surrounding mountains.

Next, we visited the famous Nizwa Souq in historic Nizwa, one of Oman’s best-known traditional markets. It is a colorful world of handmade crafts, silverware, spices, and the famous pottery from Bahla. The souq is best known for the traditional Omani khanjars, the iconic curved daggers that are still handcrafted using centuries-old techniques. We also visited Nizwa Fort, where we enjoyed a panoramic view of the city, the palm oases, and the impressive Hajar Mountains from the massive watchtower.

After the cultural part of the day, the spectacular mountain route toward Jabal Akhdar, also known as Oman’s “Green Mountain.” After a brief checkpoint, the road winds its way up to an altitude of over 2,000 meters, past deep gorges and impressive mountain landscapes. By late afternoon, we arrived at the luxurious Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort, one of the most beautiful hotels in Oman.

This unique resort features 115 elegant rooms and villas that blend traditional Omani architecture with modern luxury. From the resort, you can enjoy spectacular views of rugged canyons, lush gardens, and the mountains of Oman. Moreover, the hotel serves as the ideal base for visiting the famous Diana’s Point, the iconic viewpoint that Princess Diana made world-famous during her visit to Oman in 1986.

Day 5 – From the mountains – to the wadi – to the desert

We started the day in Jabal Akhdar with a visit to Wadi Bani Khalid. Wadi Bani Khalid is one of the most accessible and, at the same time, most beautiful wadis in Oman. Unlike many other wadis, there is water here all year round, creating large, clear natural pools.

The surroundings feature palm trees, rock formations, and tranquil pools where you can swim right away without having to walk far. This makes it a perfect spot for families and travelers looking for a relaxing experience.

From Wadi Bani Khalid, we then drove into the Wahiba Sands (desert) for an overnight stay at the most beautiful glamping site in Oman. Nestled amid the vast sand dunes of the Omani desert, the camp offers spacious tents with soft carpets, comfortable beds featuring excellent mattresses, and luxurious bedding. The interior is steeped in Arabian charm, with elegant carpets, lanterns, and cushions that create a warm, atmospheric ambiance. For maximum privacy, the camp features a private bathroom with a hot shower, a sink with running water, and a camping toilet with a chemical flush system, while wooden floor tiles further enhance the comfort.

Our daughter loved stargazing and sitting around the campfire with the Omani guides.

Day 6 – Back to Muscat via Wadi Shab

On our way back to Muscat, we visited the spectacular Wadi Shab, undoubtedly one of Oman’s most famous and beautiful wadis. This impressive gorge is known worldwide for its crystal-clear turquoise waters, steep rock faces, lush palm oases, and hidden caves.

What makes Wadi Shab so special is the unique combination of hiking, adventure, and swimming in one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the Middle East. The tour begins with a short boat ride across the river estuary, followed by a beautiful 45-minute hike through an impressive canyon featuring rock formations, palm trees, and natural pools. The absolute highlight is swimming through narrow water passages toward a hidden cave with a waterfall, a unique experience found nowhere else in Oman.

After this adventurous excursion, we enjoyed a relaxing afternoon at the luxurious Kempinski Hotel Muscat, located on the coast of Muscat.

The Kempinski Hotel Muscat features 310 spacious rooms and suites, decorated with an elegant blend of traditional Omani details and modern luxury. The rooms offer views of the sea or the resort’s gardens. In addition, the hotel boasts no fewer than ten restaurants and lounges, including Thai and Indian restaurants, an Indian tea house, and a cigar lounge. The resort also offers an extensive kids’ club with a soft play area for families. We highly recommend dining at Zale, the charming seaside restaurant and beach bar with stunning views, a Greek-inspired menu, and excellent dishes featuring locally caught fish and seafood.

Why Oman is perfect for families with children

Oman is a surprisingly family-friendly destination in the Middle East and ideal for families looking for a combination of adventure, relaxation, and culture. The country is safe, has friendly locals, and boasts impressive landscapes. On a family trip through Oman, you’ll discover spectacular deserts, green oases, ancient forts, impressive mountains, and a beautiful coastline with white-sand beaches and clear blue waters.

For children, the natural swimming spots are a particular highlight. Wadis such as Wadi Shab and Bimmah Sinkhole offer the chance to swim in turquoise water amidst spectacular scenery. Oman’s beaches are also perfect for families thanks to the warm and calm seawater. During the winter months, temperatures are ideal for swimming, snorkeling, dolphin spotting, or taking a boat trip along the coast.

According to Condé Nast (2025), Oman is among the safest countries in the world. With a Safety Index of 81.4, Oman ranks 6th globally—higher than many well-known European destinations.

Best time to visit Oman with children – When to go on a family trip?

The best time to take a road trip through Oman with children is from October through April. During these months, temperatures are pleasant and ideal for families who want to travel in comfort and fully enjoy nature, culture, and adventure. During the day in winter, temperatures usually range between 25 and 30 degrees, while in the evening it cools down pleasantly to around 20 degrees. December, January, and February are especially perfect for a family trip to Oman thanks to the sunny climate, the many outdoor activities available during this time, and the inclement weather in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Starting in May, temperatures in Oman rise rapidly, and during the summer months, the mercury can soar to nearly 50 degrees in some areas. Traveling during this time is less comfortable, especially with young children. That’s why the fall break, Christmas break, and spring break are ideal times to visit Oman. Oman is therefore an excellent winter sun destination for families looking to escape the cold European winter while visiting one of the most beautiful long-haul destinations for families.
